LibreTexts Well Represented at BCCE 2024

Delmar Larsen, Josh Halpern, and Justin Shorb returned to the Biennial Conference in Chemical Education (BCCE) at University of Kentucky after a four-day series of expo days, talks, and three workshops. The Chemistry Library is the oldest of the LibreTexts Library, so it was exciting to see faculty from across the country at different levels of engagement as the community of users expands. It was exceptionally exciting to meet graduate students (ie. future faculty!) excited about the ability to create materials for the next generation of courses in OER! The booth was very well-attended with many great opportunities to help faculty reduce the cost of learning materials in their courses — and of course so much swag! Our new mascot, Benny, made his public debut, as well!

Josh led a full to capacity workshop on LibreTexts: Building your OER textbook for your class. Delmar led another full to capacity workshop on ADAPT: LibreTexts Online Homework System, where attendees learned how to put together assessment materials for existing courses, or further their knowledge. Justin co-hosted a workshop on Aligning laboratory experiments with learning objectives for focused formative assessment with his former colleagues which helped faculty to define Laboratory Skills, Learning Objectives, and then how to align their assessment with those objectives in a meaningful way in the laboratory. The 10 attendees refined their curriculum and he’s most excited to bring these sorts of curriculum planning/assessment workshops to the Libreverse!

Altogether, we spanned textbooks, homework, and laboratory work all in one week!
