Updates from The Academy at LibreTexts
The Academy at LibreTexts just wrapped its first year, and what a year it's been. Through workshops and publishing cohorts, we've partnered with educators to grow open education on campuses across California and beyond.
Our first completed cohort is already bearing fruit: two new Public Health texts by faculty from Coastline Community College and City College San Francisco.
"Our cohort [wa]s composed of only three people, and it started in March last year. It has been such a great experience!! Being part of a group and having a platform expert help along when problems arise has made the navigation and the focus to stay in building content, which is the goal! I feel fortunate to have been paired with such great and collaborative people, Justin, our LibreTexts expert, and Janey, a colleague from another college. If your college has funds for taking part in a cohort, such as this, I highly recommend!"
-Fabiane Morales, MpH
Instructor of Personal Health, Public Health, and Aging Healthy, Coastline Community College

Justin Shorb, Director of Curriculum Innovation and Development, has been busy leading workshops across the state, in person at Fullerton and Coalinga Colleges, and virtually at Southwest College, Los Angeles Mission College, and more. These workshops are fully customizable to your campus, covering everything from open publishing and pedagogy to building your own OER. Prefer to go at your own pace? Our asynchronous courses let you get started on your own time.
And one more thing: a brand new Academy website launches in just days. New interface, easier features, something for every open practitioner. Follow us on social media so you don't miss the announcement.

Upcoming Workshops
There's still time to register for two upcoming, in-person workshops hosted by colleagues at the ASCCC OERI this fall:
Register for Friday, October 2, 8:00 am - 3:00 pm San Diego College of Continuing Education North City Campus
Register for Friday, October 23, 8:00 am – 3:00 pm OERI Regional at Monterey Peninsula College
These workshops are a great way to get started using LibreTexts to create sustainable OER and open education initiatives on your campus. Space is limited so be sure to register soon.
Noteworthy
Since our start in 2008, the LibreTexts team has facilitated faculty collaborations across the country, helping instructors work together on building new course content while making powerful connections across institutions and disciplines. Making it easier for our community to work together and build their own communities starts here! Currently we have faculty looking to work on the following projects over the next year:
- Introduction to Special Education for K-12 Classrooms - especially on describing how to implement best-practices in the classroom (textbook)
- Organic Chemistry Structure-based Question Writing (using ADAPT Sketcher)
- Voice and Video thread-based question writing for language courses (ADAPT Discuss-It); Especially in Spanish, Portuguese, French, Arabic, and Italian
- Collaboration opportunities for Education Research
- Materials Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, and Nanomaterials
- Mathematics in Context, Intro to Physics, Sport Studies,
- Emerging technologies, UDL in ID, Learning theories in action, instructional strategies for e-learning, ID models through experiential learning
