1-2 Coalinga College Embraces Academic Freedom
Coalinga College received the ASCCC 2024-2025 Exemplary Program Award this year for the extraordinary feat of moving from 10% OER adoption rates amongst full-time faculty to 85%. Situated in a town of 17,000, Coalinga College serves the town and an area of surrounding communities over 2000 square miles.
Some of the Coalinga faculty join us today to talk about their understanding of students’ needs and how OERs have helped them engage their students in the learning process. OERs, and LibreTexts’ Remixer tool, have made it simple to include all and only the material they want to present, in the order that they consider best, without having to worry about students getting lost.
Faculty are no longer bound by what a publisher thinks the content presentation should be. And they can ensure they have the materials they need from Day One, so they no longer need to delay diving into the materials. Faculty time can be spent teaching instead of having to wait for students to have the books delivered.
Four faulty members will discuss their experiences with OER adoption, and how they continue to make change for their community.
3-4 LibreTexts Remixing Made Easy: Supporting Faculty in Creating OER Without the Tech Overwhelm
Remixing an OER textbook can feel daunting – especially when faced with new platforms and tools. In this session, Cosumnes River College shares practices to utilize support staff to streamline the LibreTexts remixing process. This approach allows faculty to focus on fine-tuning content rather than learning a new interface.

Friday, March 7:
The OpenStax Microbiology Ancillaries (OSMA) Project is an innovative open education initiative that brings together educators, researchers, and students to develop high-quality, openly licensed learning resources for microbiology. This project enhances accessibility, fosters inclusivity, and empowers both students and instructors with adaptable, freely available educational materials in the ADAPT homework system and H5P/LibreTexts Studio.
This presentation will highlight the international collaboration at the heart of OSMA, featuring insights from Ying Liu, biology professor at City College of San Francisco (CCSF) and visiting scholar at the University of Dundee, and her team of students in San Francisco and Dundee, Scotland. Together, we will explore how cross-border teamwork enriches resource development, ensuring diverse perspectives and global relevance.
Students from both institutions will share their experiences as co-creators, reflecting on the impact of open education on their learning, professional growth, and sense of community. Their voices will illuminate how participation in OER projects enhances scientific literacy, collaboration skills, and engagement with real-world microbiology applications.
By showcasing OSMA’s student-driven, equity-focused approach, this session will inspire educators and institutions to embrace open education and foster meaningful learning experiences through international partnerships.
